The Happiest Place On Earth
While the Billiken basketball team may have been taken down by Louisville yesterday, the 48 hours after the victory over NC State on Thursday had campus in a state of madness. And when I say madness, I mean a joyous energy that took over our campus, reminding us all why we love SLU so much. Don’t believe me? Here’s the breakdown of those 48 hours.
Thursday 3/20 6:20-9pm: The basketball team, led by our beloved senior starters, executed one of the greatest comebacks in school history over NC State, capturing the nation’s attention. The watch party I attended at the Billiken Club (Salsi’s) was one of my favorite memories of freshman year. The amount of cheering, screaming, jumping up and down out of excitement, and racing hearts was unreal, and an incredible atmosphere to be a part of.
Thursday 3/20 9pm-2am: Endless chants of “S-A-I-N-T L-O-U-I-S (cue the tune of “When the Saints Go Marching In”) are heard all over campus. Nobody complains of lack of sleep because WE ARE THE BILLIKENS!
Friday 3/21 9am: The school announces the election of our new president: Fred Pestello, Ph.D., former president of Le Moyne College. As a lifelong Clevelander, and the daughter of two John Carroll University alumnae, it took all of my energy to summon the desire to scream “GO TRIBE! GO BLUE STREAKS!” as Dr. Pestello referenced his Cleveland upbringing and undergraduate degree from JCU. I was impressed by Dr. Pestello’s speaking manner, excitement for our SLU community, and plans to build upon all that makes SLU great.
Friday 3/21 9:20am: I almost faint while shaking Dr. Pestello’s hand. Best handshake EVER!
Friday 3/21 10am-2pm: Billikens enjoy the beautiful weather while walking around on campus in between classes. The Kappa Deltas are out on the Quad promoting their Shamrock Week philanthropy efforts, blasting the best of the best of *NSync, Backstreet Boys, the Spice Girls, and more for all to hear (I know: BILLIKEN JAM TIME!).
Friday 3/21 3:00pm: I enjoyed my very first trip to Castlewood State Park. While the leaves may not be reappearing on the many trees just yet, the scenery was beautiful, and even more enjoyable in the 70+ degree weather.
Friday 3/21 10:30pm-3am: Billikens flock to the Steamroller Bagel Truck, parked on Laclede, to buy a bagel and support SLU Dance Marathon’s efforts in raising funds for SSM Cardinal Glennon and St. Louis Children’s Hospitals. For The Kids!
Saturday: Billikens prep for the Louisville game. While the basketball team bows out of the NCAA tournament, Dr. Pestello shows up to the student watch party in the Billiken Club and offers $20 to be raffled off to a student. We made sure to show our new president that, win or lose, we are proud Billikens always.
So be here. Be a Billiken.
